Project Description:
Sichon District, located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand, is a treasure trove of historical narratives and cultural heritage dating back to the 19th century. The area is influenced by a rich mix of religious traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chinese Taoism, making it a prime example of cultural diversity. The ancient relics of temples and shrines reflect the district’s varied religious history and its profound impact on the local culture.
Over the years, the population in Sichon has shifted from the highland forests to the coastal plains. The recent resurgence in the district’s cultural significance is largely driven by the growing popularity of the “Ai Khai” shrine at Wat Chedi, which has attracted both locals and tourists, revitalizing the area and renewing interest in the cultural heritage of the district.
While there are existing cultural heritage databases focused on Sichon, most of them emphasize well-known landmarks such as the ancient city of Alang and the Ai Khai shrine. However, other significant aspects of the district’s heritage, such as local culinary traditions, folk games, arts, beliefs, and artisanal products, remain underrepresented and insufficiently documented.
Building on the success of previous cultural heritage management projects, which centered around Wat Chedi, our current project aims to create a comprehensive digital platform showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of the Sichon area. We aim to establish a digital repository that preserves both the tangible and intangible cultural assets of the region.
The digital repository will include:
- Intangible Cultural Heritage: Legends, traditional knowledge, beliefs, and stories from local artisans, elders, and community members. Their stories and experiences will be recorded and preserved through audio clips, written accounts, and video interviews.
- Tangible Cultural Heritage: Documentation and preservation of traditional crafts, architectural styles, sculptures, and other physical artifacts that embody the cultural identity of the area.
Digital storytelling will be at the heart of this project, utilizing multimedia elements such as images, sounds, and videos to bring these cultural narratives to life. This approach will allow storytellers to share their unique perspectives and experiences in engaging and approachable formats, ensuring that their voices are heard and preserved for future generations.
Once the content is gathered, it will be published through a dedicated website [URL], making it accessible to a broad audience, including residents, tourists, government agencies, and researchers. This platform will serve as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring and understanding the rich cultural heritage of Sichon.
Project Outcomes:
- Comprehensive Data Set: A detailed profile of the cultural identity and diverse cultural products of the area.
- In-depth Analysis: An examination of the current cultural heritage management value chain, identifying strengths and areas in need of improvement.
- Digital Storytelling Collection: Capturing and preserving intangible cultural heritage through the voices of local communities.
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 11.2.6: Recording and preserving cultural heritage, including local legends, traditions, languages, and knowledge, particularly of displaced communities.
- SDG 17: The project fosters partnerships that promote sustainable development goals through collaboration with local communities, government agencies, and researchers.
Beyond the immediate scope of recording and preserving cultural heritage, this project seeks to foster a sense of pride and ownership among the local population regarding their cultural legacy. We aim to strengthen the connection between residents and their historical roots by involving community members in the storytelling process.
Additionally, this project will provide educational opportunities for younger generations, enabling them to learn about and appreciate their cultural heritage. Educational workshops and interactive activities will be organized in schools and local communities to ensure that Sichon’s knowledge and traditions are passed on to future generations.
In conclusion, the “Digital Storytelling: Cultural Capital Management Surrounding the Ancient Sand Dune” project is a multifaceted initiative designed to preserve, document, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Sichon District. By creating a dynamic digital repository and involving the local community, we aim to ensure that the cultural legacy of this area is safeguarded for the future while promoting sustainable development and cultural pride.
